Himlung Himal Expedition (7,126 m)

A Wild Adventure in the Heart of the Nar-Phu Region

Himlung Himal is an exceptional destination for mountaineers looking to venture far from the beaten paths of peaks like Manaslu or Makalu. Having opened to climbers relatively late (the first successful ascent was by a Japanese team in 1992), this mountain offers an authentic experience in an area that has remained wild and untouched.

Technical Sheet

  • Altitude: 7,126 m
  • Region: Manaslu / Nar-Phu Valley
  • Difficulty: Moderate to Technical (A technically accessible but physically demanding climb)
  • Duration: 23 days
  • Best Seasons: Spring (April – May) and Autumn (October – November)

Expedition Highlights

  • Cultural Immersion: Journey through the restricted villages of Nar-Phu, Koto, and Meta, all rich in Tibetan culture.
  • Wild Nature: A varied trek that includes dense forests, waterfalls, glacial rivers, and high-altitude landscapes.
  • Serenity: A less-frequented region (fewer than 1,000 climbers per year), guaranteeing an isolated and magical mountain experience.

Climbing Profile

Although Himlung is considered one of the more technically “accessible” 7,000-meter peaks, it should not be underestimated.

  • Preparation: Extreme physical and mental fitness is required. A thorough knowledge of mountaineering equipment is essential.
  • Camp Logistics:
    • Camp 1: 5,450 m
    • Camp 2: 6,150 m
    • Camp 3: 6,375 m
  • The Final Challenge: The last section towards the summit is particularly tricky, involving a vertical ice climb that demands maximum focus.

🗓️ Why Choose Spring or Autumn?

These weather windows offer:

  • Clear skies for breathtaking panoramic views.
  • Stable snow conditions for increased safety.
  • Moderate temperatures that make the approach and life at base camp easier.
  • An ideal window of opportunity in early October: This is the pivotal moment when the monsoon has fully receded, giving way to dry air and crystal-clear visibility, before the strong winter winds settle on the peaks.

Detail Itinerary

Namaste! Today, you arrive in Kathmandu, the gateway to a fascinating world. As soon as you land, a warm welcome awaits to transfer you to your hotel, where the Nepalese charm will immediately envelop you. To celebrate this first step, a welcome dinner will be hosted with your local guide and expedition leader. Their passionate stories and sincere hospitality will immerse you in the vibrant soul of this legendary city, while introducing you to the team that will accompany you to the summits. This special moment of sharing and briefing is a gentle introduction, perfect for building connections before the great wild adventure that awaits you on the slopes of Himlung Himal begins.

This second day in Kathmandu is dedicated to anticipation and meticulous preparation. Within the historic walls of the Department of Tourism, we will complete the final administrative formalities and obtain the necessary permits to tread the sacred lands of the Nar-Phu valley. This is also the crucial moment for checking your gear: every crampon, rope, and piece of technical clothing is reviewed to ensure your safety. You will then have free time to wander through the lively streets of Thamel, where colorful shops are filled with treasures and equipment, perfect for any last-minute purchases. This final evening in the city is yours to enjoy, allowing you to savor the calm before the total immersion into the wild lands of the Manaslu region.

This morning, you leave the hustle and bustle of the capital to delve into the rural heart of Nepal. The scenic drive to Besisahar is a true invitation to contemplation: for six to seven hours, you will travel along the turbulent banks of the Trishuli and Marsyangdi rivers. Through the window, the landscape transforms, revealing green hills carved with agricultural terraces and small traditional hamlets where life flows at nature’s pace. It is an authentic first contact with the country’s roots before ascending towards the ice giants. Upon your arrival in Besisahar, the gateway to your journey, you will share a friendly meal before spending your first night in a lodge, cradled by the fresh mountain air.

The adventure takes on a rawer dimension today as you embark on a spectacular and rugged mountain road. Following the twists of the mighty Marsyangdi River, you will gradually ascend the valley, surrounded by dizzying cliffs and thickening forests. Every kilometer traveled takes you further from modern civilization and closer to the peaks. After a six to seven-hour drive, you finally reach the village of Koto. This place is more than just a stopover: it is the official gateway to the mysterious and restricted region of Nar-Phu. In the peaceful atmosphere of your lodge, you will feel the excitement building, knowing that tomorrow, your feet will finally tread the trails of this isolated and preserved land.

Today, your hiking boots finally touch the ground of the mysterious Nar-Phu valley. As you pass the checkpoint, you enter a wild sanctuary where time seems to have stood still. The trail plunges into deep nature, guiding you through dense forests and along impressive cliffs overlooking the river. Crossing dizzying suspension bridges adds a touch of adrenaline to this immersion, while the murmur of the water accompanies your every step. After seven hours of walking and a gradual ascent, the hamlet of Meta reveals itself, perched at 3,560 meters. In the silence of the high mountains, you will spend your first night under the stars or in the rustic warmth of a lodge, already far from everything, in the heart of a world’s-end landscape.

The journey continues upward today, as the dense vegetation gives way to the raw, arid beauty of the high valley. During these five hours of walking, the scenery becomes mineral, offering a striking contrast to the previous days. Your efforts are rewarded with a magnificent spectacle: the majestic silhouettes of Annapurna II and Pisang Peak stand proudly on the horizon, offering you breathtaking panoramas. Upon reaching Kyang, an ancient seasonal settlement nestled on a desert plateau, you will fully experience the isolation and serenity of the Great Himalayas. This night in a tent, in the heart of this wild and pure landscape, gently prepares you for the altitude and the vastness that surrounds you.

Today, your ascent continues into a landscape that opens up to the immense. During these five hours of walking, you will progress through wide glacial valleys where the sky seems vaster with every step. The trail, though steadily rising, allows you to contemplate the mineral purity of the high altitude. Your destination, Kuma, is a place filled with rare authenticity: this herders’ village, nestled at 4,200 meters, is a testament to an ancestral way of life dictated by the seasons and yak herds. The air is thinner, but the wild beauty of the surrounding peaks offers new energy. As you set up your camp for the night, you will soak in the absolute tranquility of this high plateau, a true balcony to the world before approaching the base camp.

At this altitude, the body needs time to adjust to the thinning oxygen, and this day in Kuma is a key step for your success. Under the pure sun of the high plateaus, you will enjoy a well-deserved rest, interspersed with short hikes on the surrounding ridges. These exploratory walks, without the weight of a backpack, allow your body to adapt gently while offering spectacular views of the valley’s rugged terrain. It is also a special time to observe the life of local herders and fine-tune your technical preparations. In the serenity of the camp, between reading and discussions with the team, you will gather your physical and mental strength for the climb that now looms on the horizon.

Today, excitement is at its peak as you finally head towards the sanctuary of Himlung Himal. After four hours of a gradual and sustained walk, the landscape transforms to reveal a vast glacial moraine where your base camp is established. At 4,850 meters, you are now at the foot of the giant, surrounded by an amphitheater of snow-capped peaks that dominate the horizon. On-site, a real temporary village awaits you: the team will have fully prepared your new home with kitchen tents, a friendly dining hall, and all necessary means of communication. As you settle into your tent for this first night at base camp, facing the imposing silhouette of Himlung, you will feel that the real challenge is about to begin.

These two days at base camp are the beating heart of your preparation. In this high-mountain atmosphere, rest mixes with intense technical activity to forge team cohesion. Under the expert guidance of our climbing Sherpas, you will participate in in-depth training sessions: handling glacier equipment, perfecting fixed-rope ascent techniques, and rigorously reviewing safety protocols. Every move is repeated until it becomes a reflex, while your body completes its final acclimatization to the altitude. Between technical preparations, these moments shared in the mess tent over a hot tea are essential for strengthening your mindset. You will end these days ready, physically and technically, to face the icy slopes of Himlung Himal.

These four days mark the true hand-to-hand struggle with the mountain, where patience and endurance become your best allies. Following the “climb high, sleep low” acclimatization strategy, you will begin a demanding cycle of rotations. You will transport your equipment—the “ferry load”—to successively establish Camp 1 at 5,450 m, Camp 2 at 6,000 m, and finally Camp 3 at 6,375 m. To perfect your adaptation, you will spend one night at Camp 1 before going up to “touch” Camp 2, a crucial step to stimulate your body before descending to the relative comfort of base camp. These round trips are the key to your success: they secure the logistics on the upper levels while strengthening your lung capacity. Between nights at altitude and strategic rests at base camp, each established camp brings you a little closer to the summit dream of Himlung Himal.

It’s time to say goodbye to the ice giant. With a light heart and a mind filled with unforgettable memories, you begin your descent towards the inhabited valleys. During these six hours of walking, you retrace your steps, once again crossing the wild expanses of Kuma and the mineral plateau of Kyang. This return journey offers a different perspective on the grandiose landscapes you climbed just days earlier: the air becomes denser, breathing easier, and vegetation begins to reappear as you lose altitude. Arriving in Meta, you find the welcoming warmth of the lodge or camp, savoring the comfort of a more clement altitude after the rigors of the high camps.

Today, you definitively leave the arid high plateaus to dive back into the exuberant life of the valley. During these six hours of descent, the scenery transforms radically: the air softens, and the scents of the forest welcome you once again. You follow the path that winds along cliffs and rivers, joyfully rediscovering the lush vegetation and waterfalls that characterize the entrance to the Nar-Phu valley. Upon reaching Koto, you complete the circle of your walking adventure. It is an evening of gratitude and simple comfort at the lodge, where you can celebrate the success of this memorable expedition with your porters and team before returning to civilization.

The final chapter of your adventure begins with a long journey through the contrasting landscapes of Nepal. During this ten-hour drive, you leave the sacred mountains behind to descend towards Besisahar, before rejoining the vibrancy of the Kathmandu valley. Comfortably seated, you will watch the terraced rice fields and rivers that accompanied you at the start of your journey pass by. In the evening, to crown this exceptional expedition to Himlung Himal, a farewell dinner will be hosted. This will be the final moment of sharing with the entire team to celebrate your achievements, exchange your last emotions, and seal the friendships born on the slopes of the Himalayas. A final night at the hotel will allow you to enjoy a well-deserved rest, with your head still in the clouds.
